In what is now becoming a trend across Nigeria whenever traditional rulers are named, one of Emir Sanusi’s cousins has asked the court to annul his appointment. Usman Ado Bayero, the son of the former emir, the late Ado Bayero and two others filed a case at the Kano High Court yesterday challenging the emergence of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 14th emir of Kano.
All three plaintiffs, Usman Ado Bayero, Sadiq Yahaya and Hamza Madaki Cigari are asking that the court to sack the emir with immediate effect. They alleged that a number of irregularities trailed the selection process which produced Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Mohammed as the emir of Kano.
According to their counsel Rose Mbata, an Appeal Court sitting in Kaduna had restrained one of the kingmakers, Alhaji Bello Abubakar Tuta from parading himself as the Sarkin Dawaki Mai Tuta at the time, yet he participated in the selection process that produced the emir. She argued that Alhaji Tuta’s participation in the selection process was tantamount to contempt of the court, hence his action was null, void and of no value whatsoever.
Furthermore, the plaintiffs prayed to court to nullify all appointments, dethronements and other actions Emir Sanusi has taken as invalid since his selection did not follow due process. However, counsel to the respondents, Barrister Sanusi Ali faulted the arguments of the plaintiffs describing the issue before the court as a mere waste of time. After listening to arguments from both sides, the presiding judge, Justice Amina Aliyu fixed Tuesday, December 22 for the continuation of the case. Emir Sanusi is a highly respected financial expert with plenty of international experience and if he is removed, could be appointed into a key economic role by President Muhammadu Buhari.
