Before becoming one of the most powerful political couples in the world, Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham (now Clinton) both attended Yale University law school where the two constantly ran into one another. At the time they met (some time in 1970), Hillary was 23 and Bill was 24. Story has it that the lovebirds would share multiple campus encounters before Hillary would finally make the first move.

As told from Hillary’s point of view, the two exchanged a number of flirtatious looks at the Yale library before she decided to approach him. Years later, in a media interview, Hillary recalled waking up to Bill and confronting him – “if you’re going to keep looking at me, and I’m going to keep looking back, we might as well be introduced — I’m Hillary Rodham.” As far as Bill’s recollection of the event goes – he was so taken aback by her straightforwardness, that he was at a loss for words and had to mumble his own name back.

Despite the rough introduction, the two seemingly hit it off right away. Just a few days after their first meeting the young couple went on their first date. The date obviously went well, and the couple continued to casually see each other, eventually becoming inseparable. Their relationship was going so well that Bill decided to put his plans of becoming a coordinator for the George McGovern presidential campaign on hold, in order to move in with Hillary just a month or so after meeting her.

A few years later, the couple graduated from Yale and their relationship was going stronger than ever. To celebrate their graduation, the lovebirds decided to travel to Europe. Shortly after landing in London, and walking about the popular tourist hot spots, the couple found themselves on the shore of Lake Ennerdale, where Bill finally popped the question.

What many people don’t realize is that Hillary actually said no that day, but Bill didn’t give up. Hillary said that he would go on to propose again and again, getting the same polite “not now,” rejection out of Ms. Rodham. In order to finally get a yes out of Hillary, Bill had to get creative.

Another year later, the couple moved to Arkansas, where the two were in limbo between their academics and careers. Before committing to a career path, Hillary decided to take another trip home to Chicago to visit friends and scope out potential career opportunities over there. On the way to the airport, the couple passed a small red brick house with a ‘For Sale’ sign and Hillary made an offhand remark about it being “a sweet-looking little house.”

When Hillary came back from her trip, Bill was waiting in the airport to pick her up, with his final wooing attempt up his sleeve. “Remember that house you liked?” he asked. Turns out that while she was in Chicago visiting friends he put down a deposit on the home and took out a mortgage. “You better marry me, because I can’t live in it by myself,” he said, presenting her with an engagement ring. This time, Hillary finally said yes.

The couple tied the knot on October 11, 1975 in a small living room ceremony. Aside from a local minister and his wife, Bill and Hillary had a short guest list of 15 of their closest friends and family members in attendance. Following the intimate ceremony, a few hundred others gathered to celebrate in their backyard. Five years after the two said their vows, their first and only daughter, Chelsea Clinton was born.
