“We are definitely sad to see Pearl leave RGB. She is a great talent with many exciting opportunities that lie ahead for her. We and our viewers are going to miss her, but we are continuing to work with her on other projects, so the future is most certainly looking bright” SABC1 Portfolio Marketing Manager: Entertainment, Dichaba Phalatse, was quoted saying.

The Facebook Rapist Saga

Pearl Thusi being escorted by SAPS Crime Intelligence Unit to Hillbrow Police StationIn June 2012 Pearl Thusi was taken from the SABC 1 Tshisa launch by the members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence Unit to Hillbrow Police Station for questioning in connection with The Facebook Rapist.

It is understood that Pearl Thus allegedly promised to take the police to the house that Thabo Bester took her to in Carletonville, Gauteng – this was after he (Thabo Bester) claimed that he had taken her (Pearl Thusi) to where the bodies of his victims were hidden.

She later returned to Hillbrow Police Station accompanied by her lawyer.

A Sunday Times article quoted a statement made by Pearl Thusi to the police on July 3, 2012:

“I drove slowly and began trying to negotiate with him. I asked him not to take my laptop because all my daughter’s photos were there. He surprisingly agreed. He promised not to hurt me and told me he had already taken my phones – a BlackBerry and an iPhone.

“I offered him help that would be better than stealing. I asked him why he didn’t build a better future. I offered him counseling at my church. I don’t remember exactly when he gave me a knife or threw it to the back of my car.”

Pearl Thusi further states that she and Thabo Bester met a pastor with whom she’d worked, then drove past her home to collect her sister.

“I also collected a Bible and wrote a message in it and gave it to him. I drove to Sandton; at Kabelo Mabalane’s house.

“Thabo/Thomas spoke to Tumisho Masha, whom he strangely already knew. Tumisho looked uncomfortable”.

“I wondered how much of what he had told me was true, especially after Tumisho Masha had warned me that he was a scam artist. I heeded his warning, but it was sad. I later learnt from social networks and papers about rapes and murders and that he’d been locked up.

“I have never contacted him since or been contacted by him; according to my knowledge.

“To my knowledge I still have the knife in my home and I will look for it and hand it over.”

The Sunday Times reported that Thabo Bester’s murder weapon was retrieved from Pearl Thusi. “Sunday World can today exclusively reveal that Bester’s murder weapon, a sharp pocket knife, was found and retrieved from Thusi’s Randburg home”.

Thabo Bester was arrested in 2011 in connection with 30 charges including kidnapping, murder, rape and robbery. He was convicted for the murder of 23-year-old model Nomfundo Tyhulu, several counts of rape and robbery, and sentenced to life plus 30 years. He used Facebook to lure wannabe models to meet him, then abduct and rape them. Thabo Bester had numerous aliases, including Tom Bester, Thabo Magagula and Thomas Magagula.

While the man in question, DJ Fistaz Mixwell, tweeted “Is that all u got, surely u can do better than that @RealBlackPearl?”

Pearl Thusi responded to condemnation by tweeting: “Whatever. I’ve been hit hard in good and bad ways, but I’m fine.

“My parents paid a lot of money in school fees for me to fail on TV. What I said about Fistaz wasn’t a joke, but it also wasn’t a personal attack.”

“Hence I called reynold or Raymond or whatever his name is”.

“Interesting that none of you asked for my details to claim from me if you’re so certain the accident was my fault”.

“Just classic white people syndrome of always refusing to take responsibility and thinking blacks are out to steal from them. If you were so sure this accident was of my doing, you would have made sure you’re nice enough to make sure I pay”.

“Which I can – I could buy her 5 of those things”.

“And I could buy your mom a better car. Can’t believe your letting her drive that death trap. If you’re so concerned about her then do that and stop thinking the world is out to get you”.

After Pearl Thusi threatened to block Lyn and “Raymond/raynold”, a reportedly outraged Lyn responded: “I am glad you have put this in writing because now I can open a case against you for racism amongst others

“Expect a call from the police in due course. I am insulted as my partner is black”.
