Who Is Mrs. Lipolelo Thabane? Biography| Profile| History Of The Late Estranged wife of Lesotho’s prime minister-elect “Thomas Thabane” Popularly Called “Mme Lipolelo Thabane”

Sympathisers of prime minister Pakalitha Mosisili’s outgoing coalition, on the other hand, argue Lipolelo was killed by ABC supporters to block her bid to reclaim her position as Thabane’s legal spouse, and, therefore, the country’s first lady – ousting his current wife ‘MaIsaiah, who had been accorded the status since her marriage to Thabane during his previous spell as prime minister.

Thabane has been in divorce procedures with the deceased. The case is still pending in court. Thabane married Lipolelo in 1987; they have been separated since 2009. Thabane filed for divorce from Lipolelo in July 2012 on the grounds of malicious desertion. They had legally adopted one child.

However in 2015 Lipolelo was declared Lesotho’s first lady by the High Court following a fierce court battle, and an order was issued for her to immediately be afforded all benefits pertaining, including a chauffeur-driven vehicle and a bodyguard. ‘MaIsaih had until then been the First Lady.

Police spokesperson Clifford Molefe said Lipolelo was traveling home with a friend when both women where shot by an unknown assailant in the town of Masana, just outside the capital, Maseru. Molefe said Lipolelo died on the scene while her friend was taken to a nearby hospital. Molefe said the motive of the shooting was unknown and that investigations were ongoing.

Lesotho, which has been on a political knife-edge since an attempted coup in 2014, held elections last week, the third in five years, after then-prime minister Pakalitha Mosisili lost a no-confidence vote in March.

Thabane’s All Basotho Convention won 48 parliamentary seats, compared with 30 won by Mosisili’s Democratic Congress.

Thabane and Lipolelo had been living separately since 2012 after Thabane filed for a divorce which had yet to be granted by the courts.

Thabane’s office was unreachable for comment. However there are indication that the Lipolelo is an estranged wife of the Prime Minister, who was either trying to stage a come back or make claims on her husband.

There had been no love lost between her and her husband’s current wife.

The estranged wife of Lesotho’s incoming prime minister was gunned down just two days before his inauguration, his party and police said on Thursday, creating confusion ahead of the handover of power.

Thomas Thabane’s wife Lipolelo, 58, was shot dead in the Ha Masana village, 35 kilometres (22 miles) south of the capital Maseru where she lives, as she was driving with a friend on Wednesday.

Samonyane Ntsekele, the secretary general of Thabane’s All Basotho Convention party, said the prime minister-elect was devastated by the shooting.

“Yes it is true that Mrs Lipolelo was shot dead last night… Everyone is traumatised by these developments,” he said.

Thabane is due to replace Pakalitha Mosisili, prime minister since 2015, after forming a coalition with three other parties following elections earlier this month that handed his party most seats in parliament.

He and Lipolelo are understood to have been embroiled in a bitter divorce dispute. Lipolelo reportedly won a court case against Thabane during his first stint as prime minister affirming her position as Lesotho’s first lady instead of Thabane’s youngest wife, Liabiloe Thabane.

A police source told AFP that Lipolelo had been driving with a friend when they spotted a man walking down the road.

“The suspect pulled out the gun and opened fire on them. Lipolelo died on the spot while the other woman is fighting for her life in hospital,” he said.

Police spokesman Clifford Molefe confirmed there had been a shooting.

History of political instability

“A 58-year-old woman was shot dead last night at Ha Masana but it is too early to disclose the name of the deceased or whom she is related to,” he said.

Detectives are investigating the incident, he added.

Ntsekele said it was too early to know if the shooting would affect Thabane’s inauguration.

But Ronnie Mamoepa, spokesman for South African deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa who has played a key mediation role in Lesotho, told broadcaster SABC he hoped the ceremony would go ahead as planned.

Thabane is due to be sworn in at the Setsoto stadium in Maseru, marking the impoverished country’s third attempt at a coalition government. Both of the previous joint administrations have collapsed.

Lesotho has a long history of political instability having suffered coups in 1986 and 1991.

The small kingdom was plunged into crisis in 2014 when soldiers attempted to oust Thabane during his last stint as prime minister.

Thabane fled to South Africa, where he spent two years, while the regional bloc SADC stepped in to end the crisis. Early elections took place in 2015.
