Khaya Mthethwa (Khayelihle Nkosinathi Mthethwa) was born on 25th November 1987 in Umlazi, Durban. He is a musician, singer-song writer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He rose to fame after winning the 8th season of Idols South Africa.

Khaya Mthethwa Education Background

He enrolled at Varsity College to study project management.

He attended Highway Christian Academy School in Pinetown in KwaZulu-Natal.

Khaya Mthethwa Musical Career

When he was 10 years old he started playing drums. When he was 11 years he began singing in a school choir.

In 2001 he went for formal voice coaching and attended the lessons until 2003. He later joined South Africa’s gospel super group, Joyous celebration.

In 2012 he contested on the eighth season for the South African version of the international format show, Idols, which is flighted by M-Net.

It has been reported that he did so in order to refined his music talent and expand his horizon by exploring other genres outside of Gospel. He performed “Down to Earth” by Justin Bieber, “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5 and “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj and earned a lion’s share of the votes – 57.21%.

In the final he was left with Melissa Allison; together they performed “No Air” by Chris Brown ft. Jordin Sparks outside of the competition.

Khaya Mthethwa, for the final, performed; “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding, “The World’s Greatest” by R. Kelly and his own song titled “Move” – this was enough to see him secure a mammoth 80.20% of the votes.

After the Idol he had already recorded his hit single ‘Move’. In 2012 he released his debut album; a thirteen track album titled “For You” which was released through Universal Music Group.

Khaya Mthethwa Career in media

In 2013 Khaya Mthethwa was a choirmaster for KwaZulu-Natal in the first season of the Bonang Matheba hosted Clash of the Choirs.

In November 2013 Khaya Mthethwa began hosting a Mzansi Magic music/ talk show, Gospel Alive.

Khaya Mthethwa Personal Life

He was romantically involved with Nomzamo Mbatha and at one point they were reported that they were engaged to get married.
