Mokoena worked for one of the top three water firms in the world, Suez Environnement.
“I grew up in Bushbuckridge and there was no water there; I was born in Carolina and they have water problems. I wanted to understand what the problem was. The media and football is my life, that can’t be separated from me, but I wanted to bring a skill back home that I call my legacy project. I found that to be water.”
Two years ago, Mokoena was at UJ, studying a leadership course designed for parliamentarians and members of legislatures and after passing it with merit, this year he took on the masters challenge. He hopes to finish by 2017.
Mokoena believes he’s largely still the same person after his sabbatical, although now he’s married and is a father of two.
“When I was younger, I was brash and most spectacular; now I’m older, wiser, matured and measured in my approach. The same drive is still there. I acknowledge that I’m favoured and blessed. There was always something on the table, it was a question of me choosing,” he says.
One thing Mokoena had to walk away from was the breakfast show gig on e.tv where he lasted just three months.
“I couldn’t wake up. I had to be there at 5am and most of the time I woke up at 5am and got to the studio at 5.50am,” he confesses. He’s back at the Sabc as a sportscaster.

Walter Mokoena weds Nosizwe Vuso
Sports personality Walter Mokoena and his girlfriend of three years Nosizwe Vuso officially got married in december 2016
Sports personality, Walter Mokoena, wed his long term girlfriend in an intimate and elite ceremony this past weekend in Pretoria.
The SABC sports anchor wed Nosizwe Vuso, at a private ceremony which saw President Jacob Zuma, amongst others, in attendance.
Vuso regards President Jacob Zuma as her father after Zuma raised both she and her twin sister.
Mokoena, who has a daughter with Pearl Thusi, and Vuso have been dating for the past three years and have a child together.
